Thioguard® Treatment of Wastewater and
Biological Phosphorus Removal

Since phosphorus (P) in wastewater can lead to the eutrophication of receiving waters, its removal from municipal wastewater is essential in preventing algae blooms which consume dissolved oxygen available for aquatic life. Wastewater treatment plants use effective methods such as chemical precipitation or biological nutrient removal to reduce influent phosphorus prior to discharge to receiving waters.

The addition of Thioguard upstream in the collection system does not disrupt either of the phosphorus removal methods employed downstream in the wastewater treatment plant.  Some research studies have shown that the addition of the magnesium ion (Mg+2) can increase phosphorus uptake 3 to 12 times the normal uptake rate.  Magnesium stimulates enzyme reactions associated with the synthesis of cell materials and functions as an important inorganic cation in the accumulation of polyphosphates (particulate P).

Since Thioguard also increases the pH of a waste stream, proteins, volatile fatty acids (VFA) and fats, oils and grease (FOG) become more soluble and readily digestible in the wastewater treatment process, thereby improving bio-process efficiency.  In addition, Thioguard contributes alkalinity which is needed to maintain pH within the optimum range for efficient phosphorus removal (pH 7.5 and 8.0).

With an improvement in the overall efficiency of the biological treatment process as a result of Thioguard use in the collection system, the wastewater treatment plant may  see an increase in the phosphorus release rate.  If this occurs, adjustments to the sludge removal rate or MLSS concentration would be required to ensure adequate purging of phosphorus from the system.

Verification by Trial

Martin Marietta engineers will review the potential for Thioguard to treat H2S odor, eliminate corrosion, enhance biological treatment processes and prevent sewer overflows (due to FOG) in your system. If favorable, Martin Marietta can provide staff and equipment to conduct a low cost demonstration trial at your site.
