Magnesium Oxide

Light Burned

Light burned magnesium oxide is a reactive grade that has been calcined at temperatures ranging from 700°C – 1000°C. Martin Marietta Magnesia Specialties’ high purity light burned magnesium oxide products are available in a wide range of reactivities and are used in a wide variety of applications.

Common Applications

Hard Burned

Hard burned magnesium oxide is a low reactive grade that has been calcined at temperatures ranging from 1000°C – 1500°C. Due to its narrow range of reactivity, hard burned magnesium oxide is typically used in applications where slow chemical reactivity is required.

Common Applications

  • Abrasives
  • Agricultural
  • Building Products (Interior, Non-Structural)
  • Ceiling or Wall Tiles
  • Ceramics
  • Dental Investments
  • Drilling Fluids and Cements
  • Fiberglass
  • Fused MgO Feedstock

Dead Burned

Dead burned magnesium oxide has been calcined at temperatures ranging from 1500°C – 2000°C in a high temperature shaft kiln, which yields a high purity material with very little reactivity and high density. These products are well suited in the manufacture of magnesia carbon refractory bricks, monolithic gunning refractories, specialty refractory applications (precast shapes and castables), LCD glass, drilling fluids and cements, and other applications.

Common Applications

Specialty

Specialty magnesium oxides are manufactured to precise specifications in chemistry, particle size and surface area. Specialty products such as Elastomag® and Marinco® are calcined to produce highly reactive materials for use in specialty applications.

MagChem® 20 SC and MagChem® 50 SC are medium reactive, micronized, magnesium oxide powders formulated for use in the manufacture of silicon grain-oriented steel for high performance electrical transformers.

MagChem® 200 AD is a highly reactive, micronized, magnesium oxide powder for use as a thickener in sheet/bulk molding compounds, as an acid acceptor in PVC applications, and as a curing agent in neoprene/phenolic adhesives.
